A steel marble is shown rolling at a constant speed on a horizontal table on Planet X. The marble leaves the table at N, falls, and hits the ground at M, taking a time of 1.693 s to travel from P to M. This is illustrated in the diagram below which is drawn to scale. Calculate the acceleration of gravity on planet X.

The horizontal velocity is
vh = (80 – 20) cm / 1.693s = 0.3544 m/s

The vertical descent time tv = time to travel 20cm horizontally

tv = 0.2m / 0.3544m/s = 0.5643 s

The height fallen is h = 0.5m

h = 0.5*g*tv^2

g on the planet is
g = 2*h / tv^2 = 2*0.5m / 0.5643^2 s^2

g = 3.14 m/s^2
