Two women use the dry riverbed of the Ounila River at the base of the ancient city of Aït Ben Haddou as a shortcut to the modern town on the opposite bank.
The fortified city, or ksar, of Aït Ben Haddou got its start in the 11th century as a trading post along the caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh. The existing earthen structures date from no earlier than the 17th century.
The ksar has been used as a set for many films from Oscar-winner “Lawrence of Arabia” (1962) to the TV series “Game of Thrones.”
The Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
