Top 3 Things News Editors Want to Buy From You!

by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)

The newspaper industry is losing millions of dollars of ad revenue to the online world which include blogs, cellphones and now the new iPad. Because of their financial losses newspapers are forced to reduce their staff dramatically. Some newspapers are even laying off all of their photographers and are using freelancers instead. Now this is bad news for the staff of the newspapers but it is great news for those millions of freelance photographers out there looking to make some extra cash. I’ll show you the top 5 things that can get you photography jobs from newspapers and magazines worldwide.

#1 Severe Weather - Severe weather like tornadoes, flooding, hurricanes, brush fires and even earthquakes can make for some very dramatic photos and are of special interest to news editors. Photographing severe weather can be severely dangerous and extreme caution should be taken to avoid injury or in some cases even death. Because of the danger and risk involved in taking the photos, they usually sell anywhere from $ 50-200 per photo. Photos of major damage may sell but the photos news editors really want are actual rescues. Police and Fire dept first responders rescuing a trapped person after severe weather passes will make you the most money.. especially if you are the only one there!

#2 Structure Fires – Flames sell. Bottom line! There is no question that a fire is a tragedy for the owner of the home or business, and they happen almost every day but what sells is flames. Most photos from fires you see in your local newspaper are of a charred building with maybe some firefighter with a hose in his hand putting out the hot spots. That is boring and sometimes they won’t even run a photo of the fire, unless there are flames! By the time the local newspaper hears about the fire, dispatches a photographer and he reaches the scene most likely the fire is already out making a boring photo. So if you happen to see a large column of black smoke in the air with fire trucks racing to the scene.. get there! Because if you get photographs of flames and/or a rescue.. you could of just made $ 200!

#3 Car Accidents - Car accidents normally don’t sell very well unless it is a major crash with a fatality. Even if the crash is a minor one with minor injuries I always take a photo just in case. As a newspaper photographer I take my cameras with me everywhere I go, so if I happen to see a car crash even if it is minor I usually snap a photo. Even if I just stick the camera out the window and fire off a few shots as I pass by I will usually do it.. The reason I do this is because you never know who the driver of the vehicle is! It could be a local professional athlete, political figure, musician, actor or even a well known local celebrity. If the newspaper later decides to run a story about how the mayor’s son was involved in a car crash or a drunk baseball player crashed into a fire hydrant, then you can sell that normally boring photo as an illustration to a local news story. A freelance photographer friend of mine once shot a major car crash involving the son of a famous athlete. At the time he had no idea who was in the car but shot it anyways as he always does. The real money shot came when the victim’s famous father showed up to the scene of the crash to watch his son get cut out of the mangled car with the Jaws-Of-Life. He sold that video for thousands of dollars and is still collecting royalty check to this day!

Now those are the top three but take a look at your local newspaper today and check out the types of spot news photos that are inside. And don’t forget the local television stations too, they normally won’t buy a photo unless it is of extreme news value and no other visual proof exists. So lets say you photographed a really bad car crash late at night and you were the only photographer there. You find out the next morning that it was the star player of the local football team and his injuries sideline him for the rest of the season! Guess what.. you just made some serious cash for just a few photos you took!

Remember that most cities usually have two major newspapers and five news television stations so you pitch the photos to all of them charging them $ 100 each and you just made $ 700 for simply taking a photograph! Now there are some newspapers that will pay as low as $ 50 per photo and as high as $ 200 for the photos so your prices can vary but not bad for less than an hour of work right!?

Some people people called Stringers make a living chasing spot news with some making over a thousand dollars in sales a week. With the newspapers cutting back staff photographers an experienced Stringer can be a news editors new best friend!

I want to study Audio Production but where do I start?

Question by : I want to study Audio Production but where do I start?
I am a novice when it comes to audio. I know barely anything about it. It seems like there are a lot of areas of study, which makes it so hard to figure out where to begin! I won’t be able to start school at the Art Institute of Atlanta until I have enough active duty days to help me pay for it. (Private schools are expensive as hell.) So, in my spare time I am planning on studying the basics of audio production. Please help. Thank you in advanced!

Both of these two sites will give you information on ACCREDITED COURSES that will have you working and knowing what youre doing. DONT go ANYWHERE that isnt ACCREDITED to teach you PROPERLY!!!

aes.org

This website is the audio engineering societies members page for professionals AND students. Go and BECOME a member over there and READ everything THEY say.

The best way to learn ANYTHING is to do it yourself.
Youre on the internet, so just read everything. Start here:

Creative.com
Cakewalk.com

and read their articles about recording. Then do this:
OPEN your Favourites and make a new folder, call it SOUND INFO and add the creative page into it.
Thenmake another folder called SOUND EQUIPMENT.
Everytime you come across something you want to keep or study put it into the INFO folder so you can come back and study it.
Everytime you find a word or a term you dont know, SEARCHBAR it and add that page to the folder as well.

NOW for the best thing you can possibly do. PHONE all the local recording studios and TELL them you want to work for FREE, that you just want to LEARN and WATCH and you’ll MAKE COFFEE and sweep floors and wash their cars if they’ll let you sit in. (I own a studio and I’d PAY you to watch me work if you made a half decent cup of coffee! Sorry, I’m in Australia…)
also theres a lot of pages over at ehow.com but a LOT of the information is YEARS out of date so read with caution!
And finally this:

www.recordingconnection.com/glossyA

That website has a GLOSSARY OF ENGINEERING TERMS
Learn the words, searchbar everything you dont.
AND DONT YOU DARE JOIN UP TO PAY ANYONE ON THE WEB TO TEACH YOU THIS SUBJECT! YOU GO WHERE YOU GET A PIECE OF REAL PAPER AT THE END OF IT!!! Dont make me sorry I gave you the glossary page!!!

Hope I helped

On the left side a drunken drunkard argues with Officer Lady for no clear reason. He was interfering with the film shoot and got ticketed for disorderly public something-or-another. Moments after I shot this the little man on the right (in the white tennies) came after me cursing and yelling. I’m not exactly sure what he thought I was doing or not doing by taking a photo in a public space and as part of the film crew, but he was HOT and I could not convince him that I was not part of any imagined sting operation for the government or for the police department. He wasn’t to be consoled and walked off chattering animatedly about knowing his rights and lawyers and some such.

Stop The World, I Want To Get Off!

Stop The World, I Want To Get Off!

Almost every day, I hear someone remark how fast the world is changing – and it’s true. It’s almost unrecognizable from our parents’ days, and even from the world we grew up in.

We live in a world far more touched by a constant state of change than any generation which has gone before us. Global communication and sharing of ideas combined with ever-increasing technology has given us a world that moves incredibly fast. Add to that the increasing world population, increased global competition and the pressure we all have on profits, and we have a world with its foot stuck firmly on the gas pedal!

Mind you, it’s almost certain that the current break-neck speed at which our world turns is the slowest rate of change we’ll ever have; things can only speed up even further from here – pretty scary, isn’t it?

Just to reinforce this, the compounding reality is that there’s nothing any of us can do to slow the rate of change – whether we like it or not, the roller coaster is here to stay!

The more change we have to deal with, the greater is the potential for us to feel stressed out. People are, by their very nature, resistant to change. We have our routines and our idiosyncrasies, and we hate to be taken outside our ‘comfort zones’. How many times have you heard a colleague say ‘well, we’ve always done it that way’, or refer to how something worked ‘last time’? When we have to mix things up a little, people get uncomfortable, so it’s understandable that this can create stress.

Even changes that improve people’s lives can create stress. For example, when someone gets a promotion and has to move to a new city, they not only have to deal with all of the changes to their new responsibilities at work, with a new boss, new relationships and new knowledge; their family must also deal with the changes involved in moving to a new neighborhood — new schools, new neighbors, new places to shop, new doctor, the list can be endless. While the overall result is a positive change, all these things almost certainly add pressure to a person’s home and professional life.

Given the fact that we can’t slow the rate of change down, what CAN we do?

The answer lies in our own ability to change from within – the way we handle or react to change. If you can’t change what we don’t like, there are only two things you can do. You can elect not to be part of the thing you don’t like (which in this case simply isn’t going to work!), or you change your attitude towards it.

Here are some ideas for how you might accomplish this:

- Find the benefits of the changes you are experiencing. Think of ways you can use those changes to make your life easier. Try to avoid fighting the change, and find ways to make it work for you. It’s much easier to ‘go with the flow’!

- Focus on learning to work with the change. The more you focus on ‘getting a handle on it’, the faster it’ll be second-nature.

- Think things through. When confronted with change, look at it as if it’s a chess game, when you need to think through the several moves in advance rather than just one. A lot of the time we create a stressful situation by making a judgement call without considering what the consequences will be.

- Keep open mind, and a positive attitude. Finding fault with a new idea or dismissing it is easy, but the better our attitude to it, the less of a chore it will be. As an added bonus, staying positive will have a positive effect on your career and relationships – no-one wants to be around a negative person!

- Recognize that change can be stressful. Accept that fact and give yourself permission to feel uncomfortable at the beginning.

- Helping those around you get used to the change will give you a better understanding of the change itself, will minimize the stressful side of it, as well as impacting well on your relationships.

“I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.” is a quote from the classic poem ‘Invictus’, although most people remember it more as a line from the film ‘Casablanca’. Take ownership of your own attitude. You’ll only feel stressed if you allow stress into your life. By controlling your attitude, and your emotional responses, you will give yourself the best chance of getting the most out of change, and minimizing your stres`s levels.

Sure, change can hurt. But it is here to stay. The people and organizations who seek out the positives and embrace change will be the ones who see the most benefit from it. Will you be one of them?

Want to buy a Kindle? – Tips to buy a Kindle in South Africa

Want to buy a Kindle? – Tips to buy a Kindle in South Africa

Since we saw the launch of the new Kindle 6″ Wi-Fi & 3G models, along with the Kindle DX, I have been inundated with questions such as, Where and how do I buy a Kindle in South Africa? Does Amazon ship to South Africa? Is the Kindle supported in South Africa? Can I buy cheap Kindles in South Africa without ordering from Amazon? Do I have to pay import duties on the Kindle?

My aim is to provide you with all the information you need to buy the right Kindle with the right specifications, at the best price. So let’s get to the facts and dispel the myths about buying from Amazon, shipping, duties and buying kindles directly from importers in South Africa:

Amazon Shipping Facts:

The Kindle is a product of Amazon and they are the sole wholesale distributors of the Kindle Wi-Fi, Kindle Wi-Fi+3G and the Kindle DX
Amazon in the US ships the Kindle directly to your door in South Africa. The Kindle is for sale to customers in over 100 countries worldwide
You need to have a physical address to receive your Kindle as Amazon does not ship to a PO Box address. Use your office or home address
When you order your Kindle, you’ll also receive a micro-USB cable to charge your Kindle via your PC’s USB port
Amazon will gladly send you a replacement Kindle if anything goes wrong with the delivery of your product.
Priority International Courier services average 2-7 days for the delivery of your Kindle to South Africa
Kindle includes a 1-year limited warranty.

 Import Duties:

Amazon will add a refundable, import fee deposit, which is typically .11 on a 9.00 Kindle Wi-Fi + 3G
Amazon will designate a carrier (“Designated Carrier”) to act as your agent with the relevant customs and tax authorities in the destination country, to clear your merchandise, process and remit your actual Import Fees for such item
In the event that the Import Fees Deposit exceeds the Actual Import Fees, Amazon Export or Merchant (as applicable) will refund the difference to you.
“Ad valorem” tax dictates that the Kindle is classed as an Information Technology product and should be exempt from tax. Imported goods has a price threshold and currently the Kindle falls below threshold

Buying from Importers in South Africa

Grey importers are companies/people who would buy Kindles from Amazon and then sell it on to you. They are in fact the middleman
They cannot compete with Amazon on price because they pay exactly the same as what you would, ordering directly from Amazon
The only area where you could potentially save is on shipping cost and time as the product is already in South Africa.
If saving money is important to you, do not consider buying a Kindle from anyone other than Amazon.

How to choose between the Kindle Wi-Fi and Kindle 3G + Wi-Fi

Kindle (Wi-Fi) is a great choice if you already have a high-speed internet connection and wireless router set up in your home and do not need the added convenience of a 3G connection. 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, while on the go. If you do not have Wi-Fi set up in your home, Kindle 3G may be a better option.

Kindle 3G (Free 3G + Wi-Fi) is the easiest option because there is no wireless setup—you are ready to shop, purchase, and read right out of the box. Built-in Free 3G connectivity uses the same wireless signals that cell phones use, but there are no monthly fees or commitments—Amazon pays for Kindle’s 3G wireless connectivity. The added convenience of 3G enables you to download books anytime, anywhere, while on the go—without having to find a Wi-Fi hotspot connection. With wireless coverage in over 100 countries and territories, Kindle 3G is a great option for travelers. For South African customers, there are also no additional charges for wireless delivery in or outside your home country. Wireless download times can vary based on 3G or EDGE/GPRS coverage, signal strength and file size.

Buying Kindle Books in South Africa.

There is growing selection of eBooks, magazines and newspapers to choose from in South Africa.
There are currently 500,000 English-language books to choose from; plus U.S. and international newspapers and magazines are available for your country.
Publishers give Amazon eBook rights on a country by country basis, available titles for South Africa will vary from our current U.S selection.
Access Wikipedia via Whispernet on the experimental web browser. Access other websites like Google via a Wi-Fi connection. Blogs can also be downloaded via a Wi-Fi connection.

Kindle South Africa was started to provide a resource for buying a Kindle in SA and be a bridge between South Africa and Amazon. Our aim is to provide you with all the information you need to buy the right Kindle with the right specifications, at the best price. So let’s get to the facts and dispel the myths about buying from Amazon, shipping, duties and buying kindles directly from importers in South Africa.
