backlog at the houston ship channel

I have never seen this many ships off the coast of Galveston waiting to enter the ship channel. My theory is they are diverted ships avoiding the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

From the news on the BP Oil Spill:

"
Oil is escaping from the well at a rate of 5,000 barrels a day, five times faster than previously estimated, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. That could fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool in three days and would exceed the 1989 spill caused by the Exxon Valdez in Alaska by the third week of June. The fuel is already washing up on the coast of Louisiana, forcing shipping restrictions on the Mississippi River.

The slick may cause tankers to be diverted, tying up ships, bolstering rates and spurring owners to seek compensation for having to clean their vessels, said Ben Goggin, a freight derivatives broker at SSY Futures Ltd., a unit of the world’s second-largest shipbroker.

Derivatives tied to the cost of shipping West African crude to the U.S. jumped on speculation tankers will be delayed as they avoid the slick, he said.

Fire news, information and media…
breaking news

Trying to get latest information is keeping residents glued to news sources. Here’s what I’ve found for sources and also the latest info… –

Wallow Fire in AZ as of 6/26 is now in NM, 80% contained, largest fire in AZ history, 538,048, burning since May. Smoke has been hanging over SF all June.

Pacheco Fire 9 miles n of Santa Fe started 6/18, is 10% contained and 9,300 acres burned, two miles north of SF ski basin. SF watershed threatened.

Los Conchas fire broke out 6/27 12 miles sw of Los Alamos at 1:00 pm. Flames and smoke visible, fire grew to point of threatening LA and voluntary evacuations started at 7:00 pm. 5,000 acres burned within first 12 hours. In a little more than 24 hours (by 2:30 pm) it was scary-big, up to 50,000 acres, high winds kicking back in. 70 sq miles. By today it is sad and depressing: 6/29 – 95 square miles — about 60,000 acres+, one mile from Los Alamos. The city was evacuated yesterday. High winds, red flag dry conditions are fueling fires. Las Alamos citizens are reliving the trauma of the **Cerro Grande** Fire in 2000 which grew to 48,000 acres. This Las Conchas fire grew past that in the first 24 hours. The entire area is shell shocked, stunned and sad. Fire chief, quoted on KOAT today, said it could easily grow to 100,000 acres.

Trying to get latest information is keeping residents glued to news sources. In the fires in the early 2000s the Santa Fe New Mexican had blogs with citizen reporters giving the newest information. Twitter… Stacey Matlock with the New Mexican is one to follow. Here are good tags:

This article was concerning as local news has nothing about radiation or nuclear waste concerns. Friends say they are tired of smoke, they are taking in evacuees, they are trying to get latest information on fire, safety, they are saddened and depressed.

how can this be the same person?
breaking news

so this week we have been losing sleep and wondering what the hell happened.

if you are in tampa, you’ve seen my daughter’s father on the news. while we aren’t together anymore he’ll always have a fondness in my heart for the little person he gave me.

i had to post this to remind myself and to remind everyone that crime involves humans. we villainize our criminals so much we forget that they have lives that exist beyond, before, after the crime is committed.

i’m not excusing what he did at all!!! he should be punished again but he also needs help.

my heart goes out to everyone. to the woman’s family he tore apart, to his family who is heart broken again, to his daughter.

my daughter, who has NO idea what to think and is basically just trying to forget him. i can’t blame her but it has to hurt.

so my plea is this. think of tracy, chip, sandra, jane, ethan, cyndy…everyone affected and try for some empathy.

i maybe away for a while, or not this is my therapy. we’ll see.

what happened.

How would Australians react if Channel 9 or 7 replaced their main news anchor with a dark guy or girl?

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Question by B A: How would Australians react if Channel 9 or 7 replaced their main news anchor with a dark guy or girl?
I have noticed Australian Breakfast news channels are pretty racist only allowing white Australians in key anchor slots. How would the Australian public react if an Australian born of Chinese, Vietnamese or Sri Lankan decent was given the opportunity to have one of those roles?

Would the Australian public demand to have pretty blonds and tall white chiseled looking brown haired men back on T.V?

Can’t speak for the rest of Australia, but here in Adelaide we had Xavier Minniecon on Ch 9 News. Very popular celebrity AFAIK.
