Why do young Moroccan men give everyone dirty looks all the time?
Monday, November 21st, 2011Question by Tony: Why do young Moroccan men give everyone dirty looks all the time?
I’ve been visiting Morocco 2/3 times a year for the last 5 years and have noticed that the young men over there tend to stare at everyone and anyone. Usually these stares are accompanied by an agressive frown.
I find this puzzling as on the whole I find Moroccan men to be quite peacefull when you know them.
So why do they stare so much?
Is it insecurity?
or have they watched to much western TV and think that this is the norm in the west?
They also tend to be very leery towards woman as well but thats another story…
I find it a shame as they seem to really let themselves down with this behaviour.
Some interesting responses.
I have to clarify that these looks are not simply blank or curious stares and they are also certainly not in response to my staring at others as I dont. There are unsolicited dirty looks.
I want to add however, that it doesn’t happen all the time just occasionaly.
However, I need to add that I am married to a very attractive Moroccan woman, so I’m inclined to put the dirty looks down to racism on the part of some Moroccan men. Interestingly, we don’t recieve these looks when we are out with our two young children.
It reminds me of the some of the bigotry that I used to remember in the UK when a white woman was out with a black man.
As for the leery behaviour towards women, my wife says that unfortunately most Moroccan men find it very difficult to resist the urge to pass some crass comment to woman who are walking in the street. Apparently, this is why most Moroccan woman walking will studiously avoid any eye contact with men (not sure if this is jus
