Question by Sam Matt: How do you dance to pop music?
I am trying to learn how to dance, nothing fancy just enough to get by. I learned a basic step-touch but I don’t think it will work for the fast pop music that tends to get played at these high school dances and parties. Please don’t give me the advice to just be confident or not worry about other people, I just want a description of what to do with my body on the dance floor.

Hi there, first of all I’d like to say that although you asked me not to say this, DO be confident! This matters a lot when you’re dancing around because anyone who just goes through moves that everyone else is doing without looking like they’re enjoying it look completely out of place.
Now, because you’re a guy (I’m assuming by your name), there’s less pressure on you to be an amazing dancer. Of course, this helps, but for now just get comfortable.
If you have a large group of friends or people you’re fairly comfortable with, it’s most likely that some sort of a circle will form put of these people and everyone will just be jumping around, up and down, with their hands in the air, especially during really beaty music. Just do this, join in, and follow what other people are doing. Maybe one person will come up with some random dance movement, for example moving from side to side while bopping their head. If everyone starts doing this, do it too.
Once you get confident, you can do some silly made up dance move, and the others will follow your lead.
To get you started, if you have a Wii, you could get Just Dance (1,2 or 3) which is a dance game. If you don’t have it, just go on Youtube and type in ‘just dance’ and you’ll find different songs which have specific dance moves. You don’t need to learn these or follow them necessarily, just practise getting comfortable with moving around to the music, and you can use some of the moves if you like.
Also, watch music videos for inspiration.
It always helps if you know the songs being played so you can sing along, but don’t worry if you don’t. Just go up to someone and start shaking around to the music with them!
