Old San Juan from the air, seen from the west. The entrance to the harbor is in the foreground. Morro Castle ("El Morro"), which guards the entrance to the harbor, is just to the left of the photo. The large brown building at the far left, a hollow square, was the barracks for Morro Castle.

The red gate in the foreground at left center was the main gate to San Juan. The large white structure in the center foreground is La Fortaleza (fortress). It is the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. The large white building on the hill to the left of the gate is Casa Blanca ("white house"). It was built in the 1520s by Juan Ponce de Leon when he was the first Spanish governor of Puerto Rico, but was not completed until after his death in 1521.

The Plaza de Armas is the open space in the center of the island. It was the main square, and the place where weapons were kept and the militia met. The Alcaldia (city hall) is there.

Cruise ships dock in the old harbor at the right. Many of the resort hotels are at the top right. The dark area in the center of the coast at the top of the photo is another fort, which I did not see. The new city of San Juan is to the right of this photo.

It was dark by the time I returned to the ship. I stopped for a beer at an outdoor tavern under the city wall, called "Princesa." It was in a park of the same name, on Paseo de la Princesa.

Best viewed original or large.
